Stephanie Hoppe handwoven wool rugs

TIME & PLACE
A Collection of Rugs and Tapestries

Weaving seems to me to be akin to magic. I start with empty space within the four wooden beams of the warping frame. Across that nothingness I string the thin white lines of the warp. With the warp stretched on the loom, I fill in the lined space with the richly colored, thickly textured wefts, and row by row the rug comes into being under my hands. Thus each rug is entirely new, something substantial coming into being in a place where there had been nothing. The piece unfolds like time, strand by strand. For the weavings in this collection, I found inspiration in time in specific places: the seasons of the year in Northern California, the appearance of the elements, of memory and experience.
