In a series for the seasons, the designs for winter, spring and autumn came to me easily, building up seemingly of themselves from layers of patterns of striped elements. The colors I should use also quickly became clear to me. Summer was a different matter. I wished to evoke the soft air, warmth and bright sunshine of early summer, a time of blossoming and flourishing, of luxurious ease. Several designs with yellows proved unsatisfying. Stripes seemed too rigid. The final design of small elements floating at various depths in the background struck me as embodying the lazy hours of childhood summers free of schedules or cares.
