I wove this rug as a sampler for both yarn dyeing and weaving techniques. It includes more than 35 different shades of red, plus some yellow, green, and blue. The five “blossoms” are woven each in a different technique of eccentric wefts, that is, wefts that are woven in idiosyncratic and random ways, rather than one after another straight across the warp. Rows of twining keep them in place. A name for the rug came after I finished it and saw the bright, snapping, luminous result, which seemed to me to echo the blossoms of a pot of snapdragons given to me partway through the weaving.
