The Navajo weaving technique of vertical lines called “raised outline” makes the colors in this rug darken or lighten or change altogether when viewed from different angles and gives these flower forms the ghostly magic with which I remember the blooms on an ancient passionflower vine that covered an old lathe house in back of my childhood home.
